Yasmin (Ethinyl, Drospirenone)
General information
Yasmin is an oral contraceptive. The active ingredients are drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. It is taken by women to prevent pregnancy. It causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Remember that taking this pill will not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases, such as Chlamydia, HIV, gonorrhea and so on.
Directions
Take the drug exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use your first pill on the first day of your period and take one pill daily. The first 21 tablets contain the active ingredients. The last seven tablets do not contain any active ingredients. By taking these tablets, your body gets a break from the hormones, allowing you to have a period.
Precautions
Do not use Yasmin if you have a stroke or blood clot (especially in the patients over 35 y.o.), liver and kidney failure, cirrhosis. Let your doctor know if you smoke, have an upcoming surgery. You should to tell your doctor about any other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Contraindications
Avoid using if you have an allergic reaction to the components of the drug, breast cancer, coronary artery disease, kidney problems, hyperkalemia, renal disease or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
The medicine may cause headaches, dizziness, changes in the menstrual cycle, increase in blood pressure, liver disorders, vomiting and nausea. If you experience one of the side effects listed above your should contact your doctor.
Drug interaction
Before starting your treatment with Yasmin inform your doctor about all other medicines you use especially about prescribed and over-the counter medications, herbal products, ascorbic acid, cyclosporine, theophylline, HIV or AIDS drugs, antibiotics.
Missed dose
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are vaginal bleeding, sickness and retching.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
